Do Carnosine Anti Aging Supplements Work?

supplementsAnti ageing solutions are always popular. Some are produced from natural ingredients and others from artificial sources. The natural anti-aging supplements are preferred by some because they are safe, usually with minimal side effects. However remember just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s better.

One of the best known anti-aging supplements is carnosine which potentially can reduce the rate at which a person ages. It also helps in the general maintenance of the body. So it helps the body inside and outside. It has been around for quite a while in one form or another and there have been quite a few studies done which demonstrate the possibility that it can reduce aging.

How Does it Work?

Carnosine can be described as a molecule of protein that comprises of beta alanine and histidine (amino acids). Much aging and degenerative diseases are to do with modifications and damage caused by free radicals. Carnosine is essentially an antioxidant which can prevent this damage. This when used in combination with other antioxidants can really help protect cells. This means wrinkles don’t form as quickly on the skin. It can prevent sagging too. Normally the supplements that contain carnosine are very effective in the prevention of aging and but it provides other health benefits to the body as well.

Other Benefits

Some of the highlighted health benefits that carnosine brings to the body apart from the anti-aging elements include:

  • The protection of the brain by increased production of nitrogen, blood sugar and oxidants.
  • It also helps in the prevention of cataract formation which results in better vision through the anti-glycation properties of carnosine.
  • Diabetes and cancer can be prevented using supplements that have carnosine in them. It also helps increase the rate at which wounds are healed. Especially in cases of diabetes.
  • Cariovascular benefits can also be expected as toxins are blocked. This reduces stress on the heart and blood vessels.


The consumption of the supplements do not have any major side effects noted so far. But extensive tests haven’t been done so don’t take this as 100% fact.

The supplements are a good source of carnosine,  but foods are too such as:

  • Milk.
  • Cheese.
  • Eggs.
  • Fish.
  • Meat.

Obviously for vegetarians or vegans the supplements are ideal.

So the science is there. In theory the supplements and carnosine contained in food should work. One study showed the following:

Male fruit flies had a 20 percent increase in average life span when fed small amounts of carnosine.

So they certainly seem beneficial. But the supplements need to be taken as part of a balanced diet. They’re a good element in the prevention of aging, but not enough alone. One last thing to keep in mind is this. Although the studies show positive results, most of them have been done on animals with short life spans. Obviously it’s harder to run these tests with human life spans. So while the evidence looks good, by no means is it 100% conclusive.
