Dermal Fillers For the Lips You’ve Always Wanted

lipsOver time lips become thinner and begin to look older. You may have heard the phrase “collagen injections” used quite commonly as a way to describe the process of plumpening up your lips. But it’s not the only, or even most effective way to do this.

Collagen injections are a type of dermal filler. Dermal fillers are essentially skin fillers used to smooth out wrinkles or add shape. When we’re looking at the lips, it’s obviously the adding of shape that we’re most interested in.

What’s the Process?

The procedure is actually relatively simple. The dermal filler is injected into the lips, and the areas around the lips, to create the desired effect. The body then gradually absorbs the substance over the next few months.

Several areas of the lips can be changed depending on what exactly you want:

  • Lip Body – This is the main one. The main body of the lips can be injected to improve the shape and size.
  • The Vermilion Border – The outside of your lips. Where the color changes from red, to the color of your skin. Treatment here emphasizes and define your lips.
  • Oral Commissures (or laugh lines) – These are the lines coming from the corners of your mouth. These can be treated to make them less obvious and add smoothness.

What Types are Available?

There are quite a few different sorts of dermal fillers which can be injected into your lips. They’re all different and have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Many contain collagen. The collagen comes either from humans or cows. Collagen itself is a naturally occurring protein which is the main element in connective tissues. Typically it lasts around 3 months before another session is needed. Here are some of the most popular human collagen brands:

  • Cosmoplast
  • Cosmoderm
  • Autologen

And these are bovine based brands, your doctor may need to perform tests to make sure you’re no allergic to the treatment. However advances have made this unnecessary in some cases:

  • Zyderm
  • Zyplast

There is also another form of absorbable dermal filler which doesn’t contain collagen. Rather it’s hyaluronic acid based. It has recently grown in popularity and is seen as one of the best choices for lip augmentation. The advantages of using it is that once in your lips, it attracts water. This causes the plumpening look you desire. It also lasts much longer than the collagen. If applied by a skilled practitioner it should last for years. The two main brands are:

  • Restylane
  • Juvederm

The good thing about this type of injection is that they can be quickly taken away by injecting Wydase. This will take a few days to remove the hyaluronic acid based injection. Don’t let this give you a “why not?” attitude though. It’s still a serious procedure which can have some side effects if carried out badly.

Other Options

There are some more serious procedures which can be done to the lips, like implants. A range of products can be used as implants like polymer or even human tissues, they are inserted into the lips through an incision. It’s more of an invasive procedure and has more risks. Although the procedure is more permanent. Read more about it here.

Fat transfers are another option. It works by taking fat from one area of your body, preparing it, and then injecting it into your lips. This may result in an effect lasting longer than a dermal filler. However it’s usually more expensive.
