Dental care and white teeth is a key concern for many. Many people have turned to natural remedies for whitening teeth. Home remedies are much cheaper when compared to a visit to the dentist. Your teeth can easily be stained by coffee, medicines, tea and smoking. Staining can seep into your teeth making it hard, if not impossible, to brush them out. The longer you avoid whitening your teeth, the tougher the stain becomes.
Lemon juice is a common remedy for whitening teeth at home. You can brush or rinse your mouth with lemon juice to whiten your teeth. However, you should be careful with lemon juice because it contains citric acid. This acid is known to cause harm to your teeth by making them loose calcium. You can also mix lemon juice with baking soda. Again, this combination dissolves the calcium in your teeth and can cause permanent damage. If you do use this method wash your mouth out afterwards and clean your teeth as usual.
Another popular home remedy is the use of strawberries to whiten teeth. Strawberries contain ascorbic acid (vitamin C) which has the power to remove plaque. You simply grind the strawberries into a paste and use that to brush your teeth. As above, to avoid damage, ensure you brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste after whitening them. Acids cause damage to teeth and the fluoride can help prevent this damage. After brushing with the fluoride toothpaste, you can then floss your teeth.
Baking soda whitens your teeth by removing the plaque, neutralizing acid, and reducing surface stains. It does not bleach your teeth in any way. However, you should be careful when using baking soda as a whitening remedy. When overused it causes damage to the tooth enamel.
Apples have also been used to whiten teeth for a long time. They can help remove and scrub away stains because of their crunchy nature. Apples contain malic acid which can cause damage, but also whiten teeth. So as always be careful when using this method. You should at least wash your mouth out with water after eating apples.
Hydrogen peroxide is popularly used in homes for whitening. You simply gargle the peroxide without swallowing any of it. It is very dangerous to your health once you swallow it! Pregnant women should avoid using this remedy because it can be harmful to the unborn foetus. A better method is to simply brush your teeth with it. Read a guide here.
Good Overall Oral Hygiene
The best cure is prevention. Brushing as soon as you wake up, and before you go to bed is essential. As is using a mouth wash and flossing. Chewing gum throughout the day also has several benefits. It helps stimulate saliva production which in turn flushes out food residue which can lead to staining. This will greatly slow down the rate at which your teeth stain.
Precaution should be taken as you use these home remedies to whiten your teeth. They can cause damage if you overuse them. So don’t use them more than once or twice per week. Home remedies can be effective but, they can also be dangerous to your dental health. We do recommend professional treatment from a dentist. Or at least consultation with a professional before trying these methods. They may be able to provide you with detailed information on teeth whitening which doesn’t involve costly procedures.
